El último sueño de Frida y Diego (The Last Dream of Frida and Diego)

Mexico’s most iconic artists (and infamously stormy lovers) leap off the canvas and onto the stage in this new musical portrait from Grammy-winning composer Gabriela Lena Frank and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz. When a desperate wish on Day of the Dead reunites Diego Rivera with his late wife Frida Kahlo, he jumps at the chance to seek forgiveness. But Frida refuses to return to the world that caused her so much pain, until another departed soul inspires her to look back at the art (and the man) she once loved.

Program Notes

Lina González-Granados, LA Opera's resident conductor, commands a cast packed with international talent including mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack, baritone Alfredo Daza and soprano Ana María Martínez in this tribute to one of the most pivotal romances in history. In a truly dazzling staging crafted by an all-Mexican design team led by director Lorena Maza, the artists' own emblematic paintings merge with the folklore-inspired score to breathe new life into the love-hate saga of Frida and Diego.
