Youth Music Monterey
Youth Music Monterey is a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire excellence in individual students and enrich our community by providing young people with opportunities to participate in, and gain greater understanding of, music and its performance. Established in 1988, our programs provide two levels of orchestra experience, intermediate (Junior Youth), and advanced (Honors), allowing students the opportunity to study and play standard symphonic repertoire at a pre-university level.
*Programming and artists subject to change, please refer to the participating organization’s calendar listing for the most up-to-date program.

Program Notes
The concert at Sunset Center in Carmel, California features the Junior Youth and Honors Orchestras. The JYO program will include “Down A Country Lane” by Aaron Copland and other works TBD. Because we have acquired another youth orchestra program and are in the process of merging, we’re still working through auditions and seating. Once that is complete, additional repertoire choices will be made for this group.
The Honors Orchestra, our most advanced orchestra, will open the concert with Lightspeed, by Kevin Day. A leading voice of today’s younger composers, Kevin Day’s music has been described as propulsive and colorful, with syncopated rhythms and instrumental virtuosity, ranging from “powerful introspection to joyful exuberance.” His compositional style has been characterized as intersecting “the worlds of jazz, minimalism, Latin music, fusion, and contemporary classical idioms.” Lightspeed is a fanfare for orchestra and employs mixed meters and jazzy and syncopated motives which lead to an exciting conclusion.
Additional repertoire may include Variations on a Shaker Theme or the Outdoor Overture by Aaron Copland. More information will be available in August.
